As the air and water warm, the fish retreat. You’ll catch larger trout in late June than you did in late March. If you can catch them, that is. Lower, clearer water means the fish will be extra spooky, and even more likely to hide in only the darkest, hardest-to-reach spots.
Every time I catch a fish, I reflexively thank it (out loud) for “playing”.
“Thanks for playing, buddy.”
Why? Because I honestly feel that if they hadn’t slipped up in some form or fashion, there’s no way I’d ever catch one.
